Titan Missile Silo
Throughout the Cold War, 54 Titan II Missile complexes were built in the United States. Site 571-1 is the sole survivor of the program today and is located in Sahuarita, Arizona.
Arizona dirt once covered 18 underground Titan Missile silos during the Cold War alert. Kansas and Arkansas also were the home to 18 Titans each. Selection considerations for the locations of the long-range nuclear missiles included bases of existing logistical support and population density under the projected flight path. The on-site control centers were manned by U.S. Air Force personnel working 24-hour shifts.
The tour was fascinating. A Titan II Missile's warhead is 700 times as explosive as those of the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki ending World War II.

I watched a show on the History Channel tonight called Lost Worlds : Secret A-Bomb Factories. It is striking and reviews atomic engineering during the Cold War, cumulating with the construction of the Titan II Missile complexes.
